A security alert was triggered at the Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, located near Washington, D.C., after a suspicious package containing white powder was delivered to one of its buildings on Thursday. The incident caused several people to fall ill, prompting an immediate evacuation and investigation, according to a CNN report.
Evacuation After Multiple People Fall Sick
The situation unfolded when an individual at the base opened the package and reportedly fell ill, along with others in close proximity. “As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” a Joint Base Andrews statement said. The Air National Guard Readiness Center, located within the same building, was also cleared as authorities secured the area and restricted movement.
Medical Response and Initial Findings
Emergency teams quickly moved those affected to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center within the base for treatment and observation. A HAZMAT (hazardous materials) unit conducted immediate testing on the white powder, but initial results showed no hazardous substances were detected. Officials, however, said that further tests are ongoing to determine the exact composition of the powder and the cause of the sudden illnesses.
Investigation Underway
Base authorities have launched a full investigation to trace the origin of the package and the extent of exposure among those affected. Law enforcement agencies are also assisting to rule out any potential security threat. Reports of illness have sparked concern among personnel, though officials have stressed that the situation is under control and there is no indication of a wider threat at this time.
