As Donald Trump continues his Asia tour, the White House has confirmed that Japan will be among the countries nominating the US President for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump began his visit to Japan on Monday, where he met with the newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. According to an official statement released by the White House, the Japanese leader expressed her intention to support Trump’s nomination for the prestigious global honor. However, an official statement from Japan confirming this support is still awaited.
Japan Praises Trump’s Role in Peace Efforts
During their meeting at the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo, Prime Minister Takaichi praised Trump’s efforts in facilitating peace agreements between Thailand and Cambodia and for helping secure a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
“Mr. President succeeded in securing a ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia… also, the deal you have recently achieved in the Middle East is an unprecedented, historic achievement,” said Takaichi.
Japan, one of America’s closest allies in Asia, also signed a critical minerals and rare earth cooperation agreement with the US during the visit, strengthening economic and strategic ties between the two nations.
Trump’s Bid for the Nobel Peace Prize
Since taking office, Donald Trump has consistently labeled himself as a “President of Peace.” He has claimed to have ended eight wars, including conflicts in Gaza, India-Pakistan, and Thailand-Cambodia, emphasizing his diplomatic achievements.
Although Trump did not win the Nobel Peace Prize this year, several nations including Israel, Pakistan, Cambodia, and Thailand have publicly supported and formally nominated him for the recognition.
Trump’s Asia Tour Highlights
Trump’s Asia tour began in Malaysia, where he attended the ASEAN Summit and oversaw the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
Following his Japan visit, the US president is scheduled to travel to South Korea on Wednesday to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. During this stop, Trump will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping for a bilateral discussion amid ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.
