Early Saturday morning, masked attackers armed with fireworks, metal rods, and Molotov cocktails clashed with police on a highway near Limoges in central France. Officials believe the violence is part of a gang turf war.
Highway Blocked, Vehicles Attacked
The group targeted the RN141 highway, where they tried to block traffic and attacked police officers. The rioters used stones, iron bars, and petrol bombs during the chaos. In response, police fired tear gas and used crowd-control tactics to push the mob back. According to local police union leader Laurent Nadeau, “There were between 100 and 150 masked individuals, armed and prepared.”
Mayor Calls it Urban Guerrilla Warfare
Limoges Mayor Émile Roger Lombertie said the attackers weren’t protesting anything. “This wasn’t a protest or demonstration. There was no message, no cause just destruction and a show of force,” he explained. He referred to the mob as an “urban guerrilla” unit.
Officers Injured, Families Terrified
The clash injured nine police officers, and several vehicles were attacked, including those carrying families with children. Though no drivers or passengers were physically hurt, many were left frightened and emotionally shaken.
Violence During Peak Tourist Season
This incident happened during France’s busy summer holiday season, when roads are typically crowded with tourists and families. Just days earlier, on Bastille Day (July 14), unrest had already broken out in Val de l’Aurence, a nearby neighborhood.
The mayor has called that area a “lawless zone,” noting that it suffers from poverty and is home to many immigrant families.
Drug Activity Suspected, No Clear Link
Limoges prosecutor Émilie Abrantes admitted that the area has a history of drug-related activity, but said investigators have not yet found a direct link between this attack and recent anti-drug operations.
Government Plans to Send Reinforcements
In response to the escalating violence, France’s interior ministry announced the deployment of a special security unit to restore law and order in Limoges.
