JAIPUR: Port Blair, soon to be renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the primary gateway for tourism in this tropical archipelago. Located on South Andaman Island, it combines scenic beaches, rich colonial history, and vibrant marine life, making it a perfect destination for families seeking relaxation, adventure, and educational experiences.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND

Port Blair is well-connected by air, with daily flights from major Indian cities such as Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Bhubaneswar. The Veer Savarkar International Airport ensures a smooth arrival for families. Within the city, taxis, rental cars, and ferries make exploring the island and nearby attractions convenient and comfortable for travelers of all ages.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND CULTURE

A highlight of Port Blair is the Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, which played a crucial role in India’s independence struggle. Families can explore the jail and attend the evening light and sound show, which brings history alive for children and adults alike. Ross Island (also called Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) is another must-visit, with its colonial-era ruins, peacocks, and deer, offering a mix of history and nature. Museums such as the Samudrika Marine Museum and Anthropological Museum provide educational experiences about the islands’ tribal culture and marine biodiversity.

BEACHES AND ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

Families can relax at Corbyn’s Cove Beach, just 8 km from the city, where calm waters and soft sands are perfect for children. Chidiya Tapu, known for its sunset views and birdwatching opportunities, is another family favorite. Adventure-seeking families can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat rides, especially at North Bay Island and Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep). Havelock’s Radhanagar Beach, rated one of Asia’s best beaches, offers shallow waters safe for children.

GATEWAY TO THE ISLANDS

Port Blair acts as the hub for visiting other popular islands, including Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) and Havelock Island, providing easy access to explore pristine beaches, coral reefs, and water sports. Ferry services connect these islands efficiently, making day trips and overnight stays convenient for families.

RENAMING AND SYMBOLISM

In September 2024, the government announced that Port Blair will be renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, symbolizing India’s victory in the freedom struggle and removing colonial imprints. The new name honors the resilience of freedom fighters and adds cultural significance to the city’s identity, offering families a chance to learn about history in context while exploring the destination.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The ideal period to visit is October to February, when the weather is pleasant with mild temperatures and calm seas, perfect for sightseeing, island hopping, and beach activities. Monsoon months from June to September are best avoided due to heavy rains and rough seas.

Port Blair, or Sri Vijaya Puram, combines history, adventure, and natural beauty, making it a perfect family getaway. From walking along sandy beaches, exploring coral reefs, and enjoying water sports to learning about India’s independence struggle at the Cellular Jail and museums, families can create unforgettable memories in this tropical paradise. Its accessibility, rich cultural heritage, and scenic charm make it an ideal destination for travelers of all ages.
