India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement is only days away, but a fresh debate has already ignited. Former batter Mohammad Kaif has shared his predicted team, and his bold decision has shaken fans. Kaif included Test captain Shubman Gill in the 15-member squad but dropped him from the playing XI.

Instead, he backed Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma to open, with Tilak Varma at number three. The move has sparked questions about whether selectors should prioritise experience or versatility in the shortest format.

Kaif’s Surprising Picks

Mohammad Kaif’s prediction has raised eyebrows for several reasons. He named Suryakumar Yadav as captain, keeping Axar Patel as vice-captain. This leadership choice is unusual but shows Kaif’s intent to push flexibility over hierarchy.

In his middle order, he preferred Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, adding both power and all-round options. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav brought spin variety, while Jasprit Bumrah led the pace attack with Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj.

No Room for Gill in Kaif’s XI

Shubman Gill’s exclusion from the XI is the biggest talking point. Gill has been one of India’s most consistent batters across formats. By keeping Gill on the bench along with Siraj, Jitesh Sharma, and Varun Chakaravarthy, Kaif created a set-up that prioritises role clarity.

Still, fans argue that dropping a player of Gill’s calibre may backfire in high-pressure games.

Balance & Versatility First

Defending his selection, Kaif pointed to balance as the guiding principle. He stressed Samson’s aggressive intent as an opener and Abhishek Sharma’s recent all-round contributions.

For Mohammad Kaif, the T20 game demands more variety and fewer specialists. His approach has triggered debate not only about Gill but also about India’s larger strategy as Ajit Agarkar’s selection committee prepares the official squad.

What Lies Ahead?

The selectors will announce the Asia Cup 2025 squad on Tuesday, August 19. All eyes will be on whether Shubman Gill’s leadership credentials and recent form earn him a bigger role.

If Kaif’s version reflects even part of the selectors’ thinking, India may enter the tournament with a bold, flexible line-up. The balance between experience and versatility could define India’s campaign in Pakistan.
