A major Cloudflare outage on Tuesday caused widespread digital chaos, pulling dozens of websites offline and interrupting services used daily across the globe.
Platforms such as X, ChatGPT, Letterboxd among many others, suddenly became unreachable and left users seeking answers. The outage revived concerns about the risks of relying heavily on a small number of internet infrastructure providers.
What Caused the Cloudflare Outage
Cloudflare said early in the morning that it saw 500-level errors for multiple services. Its dashboard and API were also not working. The company started immediate investigation by its engineers, though it did not disclose the cause.
The outage came just weeks after an AWS failure brought down Reddit, Fortnite, Snapchat and other major platforms, reinforcing concerns about concentrated control over internet pathways.

Early Findings From Cloudflare
By midmorning, Cloudflare said engineers had isolated the problem and begun deploying a fix. The company added that Access and WARP services were stabilizing with error levels falling back to normal. In a statement afterward, a spokesperson told The Guardian that Cloudflare experienced an unexpected spike in traffic hitting one of its services at about 11:20 am.
The sudden surge, he said, triggered cascading errors across parts of its global network. The exact source of the traffic spike remains unknown, and the firm said teams were still working to determine the root cause.
Cloudflare Outage: A Slow, Uneven Recovery
As systems were gradually improving, users continued to face problems on sites like Facebook, bet365 and others. Even Downdetector, the platform that tracks outages, briefly went down.

Public Reaction & the Bigger Question
Online forums lit up with posts by confused and frustrated users. Many were surprised at how many services rely on Cloudflare’s infrastructure. The outage again brought attention to the vulnerability created when large portions of the internet depend on a few centralized companies.
While Cloudflare works to restore stability, the event has left many questioning whether the modern web has become too reliant on single points of failure.
