The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 will be administered by IIT Guwahati, and registration will commence on August 25, 2025. Currently, the official website, gate2026.iitg.ac.in, is running. A new paper in Energy Science has been added to the exam this year, expanding the scope of the areas covered. Third-year students and recent graduates in the fields of engineering, science, commerce, the arts, or the humanities are eligible applicants.
Members of some professional societies and those with foreign degrees are also eligible to apply. Results are anticipated on March 19, 2026, and the test will be administered over two weekends in February 2026.
Important Dates and Deadlines
Students must complete their registration between August 25 and September 25, 2025, to avoid a late fee. The extended deadline with a late fee ends on October 6, 2025.
On the weekends of February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026, the test will be administered. Students will have plenty of time to prepare for their plans after the exam, as the results will be revealed on March 19, 2026.

Who Is Eligible: Expanded Criteria
GATE 2026 is accessible to a diverse group of students and alumni. Students in their third year or above in undergraduate studies are eligible to apply. Eligible graduates include those with degrees in engineering, science, commerce, the arts, or the humanities. The goal of this inclusion is to draw in multidisciplinary talent.
To further expand access, candidates with equivalent foreign degrees and members of specific recognized professional groups are also permitted to apply.
Energy Science Enters the Arena
GATE has included Energy Science (XE-I) as a new subject paper this year. This raises the total number of subject papers to 30, which reflects the increased emphasis on developing energy technologies and sustainability.
The integration of science also represents a major shift in academics. It recognizes the need for specialists in sustainable development and clean energy, two areas crucial to the global climate and policy objectives.
The language and exam pattern for GATE 2026 will follow the same format. Out of a possible 100, the topic paper will receive 85 points, while general aptitude will receive 15. The test will be administered solely in English, and applicants can submit either one or two papers, depending on the available combinations.
