In the last eleven years, PM Modi has made it a point to wear unique turbans to the Red Fort ceremony on Independence Day. Starting in 2014 with a fiery red Jodhpuri bandhej turban, this tradition has continued with people now looking forward to his unique turbans. And on the auspicious occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued this tradition by wearing a Saffron Turban.

The nation turned on its television sets in the morning hours of the 79th Independence Day to witness the annual Independence Day ceremony, with everyone looking forward to Prime Minister Modi’s flag hoisting. As the PM made his entrance, his appearance, as always, caught everyone’s attention.

The PM wore a white kurta and churidar with a saffron bandhgala jacket and a tricolour stole, with his saffron turban completing his outfit for the ceremony.

The Saffron (Kesari) turban pays an ode to the national flag; the colour represents the courage, sacrifice, and the spirit of renunciation, which makes a powerful statement, especially after a difficult phase that came as a result of the Pahalgam attack.

PM Modi’s Iconic Turbans Over The Years

In the past, PM Modi has worn turbans of varying colours representing different things every time. For last year’s ceremony, he donned a vibrant orange, yellow, and green Rajasthani leheriya-print turban. For 2023, he chose a Rajasthani bandhani-print turban in shades of yellow, orange, violet, green, and red, paying tribute to Rajasthani culture. This tradition goes back to his first time at the Red Fort ceremony as Prime Minister, where he wore a fiery red Jodhpuri bandhej turban.
