With the final MiG-21s retired last month, India is reportedly moving forward with plans to upgrade its Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. According to The Indian Express, the retirement of the MiG-21s has reduced the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) fighter squadron strength to 29, well below the sanctioned 42.
The Super Sukhoi Upgrade Programme
The Su-30MKI upgrade, also known as the “Super Sukhoi” programme, is a major midlife overhaul aimed at extending the aircraft’s service life by up to 20 years. Officials familiar with the matter told The Indian Express that the Ministry of Defence is currently reviewing the proposal and is working to fast-track it for approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
“It is currently being examined by the Ministry of Defence. Efforts are on to send it soon to the CCS for its sanction for the design and development phase,” a senior official, who requested anonymity, said.
The planned upgrade will include a modernized cockpit, advanced avionics, upgraded radars and infrared sensors, and a new electronic warfare suite with jammer pods. Sources indicate that the programme is nearing finalization. Once CCS approval is received, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will set timelines for delivery: the initial operational clearance (IOC) version within five years, and the final operational clearance (FOC) version within seven years.
Strategic Importance
The upgrade comes at a critical time for the IAF, which now operates with fewer squadrons following the MiG-21 retirement. The IAF still awaits the delivery of 83 Tejas Mk1A Light Combat Aircraft from HAL, further underscoring the need to enhance the capabilities of existing fighter jets.
In November 2023, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved an Acceptance of Necessity for the indigenous upgrade of Su-30MKI jets by HAL. Additionally, in December 2023, the DAC approved the procurement of an advanced Electronic Warfare Suite (EWS) for the aircraft. This includes External Airborne Self Protection Jammer pods, Next Generation Radar Warning Receivers, and related equipment.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these enhancements will significantly boost the Su-30MKI’s operational capability and strengthen its protection against enemy radar and weapon systems. The DAC also approved engine overhauls last year, which will further extend the aircraft’s operational life.
