India has issued a Notice to Airmen (Notam) for a large-scale Indian Air Force (IAF) exercise set to take place from July 23 to 25. The high-stakes aerial drill will happen in Rajasthan, close to the Pakistan border.
Drill to Cover Key Areas in Rajasthan and Gujarat
The South Western Air Command will lead the exercise. It will cover parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat especially between Barmer and Jodhpur—areas located near Pakistan.
This operation is part of the IAF’s regular combat readiness programme. It focuses on boosting air defence capabilities along the western front.
Pakistan Issues Its Own Airspace Warnings
Interestingly, Pakistan has also issued Notams. These are warnings to pilots about restricted airspace. Its central region will remain restricted until July 23, and its southern zone on July 22–23.
An Indian official told The Hindu, “The exercise, likely involving two or more IAF commands, is designed to ensure round-the-clock preparedness.” Notams help clear the skies for intense military flying and prevent civilian aircraft from entering risky areas.
Fighter Jets and Night Operations in Focus
The IAF will deploy key assets like Rafale, Mirage 2000, and Sukhoi-30 jets. The drill will also involve air defence systems and support aircraft. Night flying will be a critical part, testing India’s ability to operate 24/7 in combat conditions.
Tensions High After Operation Sindoor
The drill is happening during a period of high tension with Pakistan. It follows Operation Sindoor, India’s strong military response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. The attack, carried out by Pakistan-backed militants, killed 26 people mostly tourists.
India responded by targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This marked a shift in India’s security policy, signalling what officials call a “new normal” in counter-terror operations.
Message of Strength
This IAF exercise is seen as more than just routine training. It sends a clear signal of India’s readiness and air superiority. The show of force aims to discourage future cross-border threats through rapid and precise military action.
