Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly-built Terminal 2 of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, on Saturday. The terminal is designed to handle 13.1 million passengers annually and was constructed at a cost of ₹4,000 crore. During the inauguration, PM Modi also toured the terminal to review its facilities.

Total Project Cost and MRO Facilities
Officials stated that the total project cost is ₹5,000 crore, of which ₹1,000 crore was specifically allocated for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, according to PTI. The new terminal is expected to make Guwahati airport a major aviation hub for Assam and the Northeast region.
Terminal Design Reflects Assam’s Culture and Biodiversity
The terminal’s design is inspired by Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, spanning an area of 1,40,000 square metres. Officials highlighted that the architecture aims to combine modern infrastructure with regional identity.
Tribute to Gopinath Bardoloi
The airport, named after Assam’s first Chief Minister Gopinath Bardoloi, now also features an 80-foot statue of Bardoloi outside the terminal, unveiled by PM Modi during the ceremony.
PM Modi Highlights Infrastructure Boost
Earlier on Friday, PM Modi shared images of the new terminal on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure.” He added, “Increased capacity means better ‘Ease of Living’ and a boost for commerce as well as tourism.”
Impact on Tourism, Trade, and Connectivity
With the inauguration of the new terminal, Assam’s connectivity and passenger handling capacity are set to improve, which will support tourism, trade, and overall economic growth in the region.
