It was released on July 25, 2025, and, after being praised by critics, it became a hit among the masses. For all those who missed out on enjoying it in theatres, the wait is finally coming to an end Maareesan will start streaming on Netflix from August 22, 2025.

A Tale of Betrayal and Revelations

The story is about Dhayalan (Fahadh Faasil), a scheming conman, who tries to con a senile old man, Velayudham Pillai (Vadivelu), suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The first impression suggests that Velayudham is an easy target with a fortune to steal.

But the actual theft is not as simple as that. As Dhayalan travels with the old fellow, one layer after another is removed from Velayudham’s past, prompting a gradual change in the young conman’s perception. The once dubious manipulation begins to evolve into musings about morality, compassion, and the unpredictability of human bonds.

Ensemble Powerhouse

With a far evocative and omnipresent supporting cast, Kovai Sarala as the enterprising Assistant Commissioner Fareeda, Vivek Prasanna in a dual role as Ganesh/Arun, Sithara as Meenakshi, Livingston as Chaari, P. L. Thenappan as Inspector Kanagaraj, Renuka as Dhayalan’s mother, and Saravana Subbiah as the Judge.

Directed by Sudheesh Sankar and written by V. Krishna Moorthy, the production will be made under R. B. Choudary’s Super Good Films, which have very knowledgably produced crowd-pleasing blockbusters in the past.

What is the purpose of Maareesan?

Maareesan is a criminal named Dhaya (Fahadh) embarks on a quest with Velayudham (Vadivelu), who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, with the intention of robbing him.  But in the end, the journey permanently alters their lives.

The film’s music was composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, while Kalaiselvan Sivaji was in charge of the photography.  When the movie came out, it was well received, and the performances were especially praised.

Amalgamation of Humor and Heart

Set apart from all the others, Maareesan toes the thin line separating dark humor and emotionality. While Fahadh Faasil goes for his trademark intensity, Vadivelu charms every ounce of carrying warmth in his own hilarious way, adding weight to the evident suspense in the movie. The movie is quite beloved amongst the critics for its clever screenplay, great acting, and a seamless transition between laughter and tension.

With the Netflix release of Maareesan, it can be expected that several audiences worldwide will be viewing the film. The film showcases Tamil cinema’s creative strength, with vigil in proving how regional tales can hammer universal chords. And as it steps into the streaming realm, Maareesan is set to engage, entertain and ignite dialogues beyond the borders of Tamil Nadu.
