Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he received a call from US President Donald Trump, who wished the people of India warm Diwali greetings. The two leaders, in the course of their conversation, reaffirmed their commitment to stand united in fighting terrorism in all its manifestations.
Strengthening India–US Partnership
In his message, Modi thanked for the wishes and highlighted the common values of both nations. Modi stated that India and the United States are “two great democracies” that would still “light up the world” with hope, solidarity, and resolve, united against “terrorism in all its forms.”

Trump Praises Modi, Calls Him a “Great Friend”
During the White House Diwali celebration, President Trump complimented Modi, referring to him as a “great person” and “a great friend.” He emphasized the robust and dynamic relationship between India and the United States, particularly in trade and regional peace initiatives.
Let me extend our warmest regards to the Indian people. I just had a conversation with your Prime Minister today. Had an excellent conversation. We discussed trade… He’s very interested in doing that,” Trump stated. “Though we did discuss a little while ago let’s have no war with Pakistan… And we don’t have a war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing. Trump continued, “He’s a great person, and he’s become a great friend of mine over the years.”
White House Diwali Celebration
Reflecting on the spirit of Diwali, Trump said, “In a few moments, we’ll light the diya as a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness… It’s knowledge over ignorance and good over evil.” He reminded everyone that the festival celebrates stories of “enemies defeated, obstacles removed, and captives freed.” He further said that the flame of the diya reminds us “to pursue the path of wisdom, to labor diligently, and to ever be thankful for our many blessings.” President Trump then lit the diyas to celebrate the festival, marking peace and positivity.
Presence of Indian and US Dignitaries
The White House Diwali ceremony was also attended by a number of high-ranking officials such as FBI Director Kash Patel, ODNI Director Tulsi Gabbard, White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai, India’s US Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
A group of eminent Indian-American business leaders also attended the ceremony, reflecting the strong cultural connect and the crucial role played by the Indian diaspora in enhancing bilateral ties. The celebration served not only to underscore the increased India–US friendship, but also the cultural importance of Diwali and shared faith in the victory of light over evil and good over darkness.
