To take that job, he resigned as vice chairman of the Edmonton Oilers, the club he led to four Stanley Cup championships as a player in the 1980s. Post-retirement from the NHL, he also was a minority investor and coach of the Phoenix Coyotes and executive director of the 2002 Canadian national team that won the gold medal in men's hockey at the Salt Lake City Olympics.
