A minimum of three people were murdered and 20 others injured in a mass shooting in Minneapolis at a school on the city’s south side in Minnesota. The shooting took place at the Annunciation Church, which is also home to a grammar school.
The shooter was one of the victims killed after succumbing to self-inflicted wounds, according to a Justice Department official quoted by Reuters. The man was carrying a semi-automatic weapon.
FBI and Law Enforcement Act Quickly
US President Donald Trump announced he had been briefed entirely on the disaster and mentioned that the FBI were present at the scene.
“The FBI responded quickly and they are at the scene. The White House will continue to watch this horrific situation unfold. Please join me in praying for all parties!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The City of Minneapolis on X: “There is no current active threat to the community. The shooter is contained.”
Bill Bienemann, a local resident who lives a block or so away and attends Annunciation Church, said he heard “dozens of shots” fired.
Hospitals Treat Victims, Including Children
At least five of the wounded were children, who were taken in a rapid response by Children’s Minnesota, which is one of the largest pediatric trauma centers. Hennepin Healthcare, which hosts Minnesota’s biggest emergency department, also confirmed that it was treating several victims from the shooting.
FBI director Kash Patel recognized the event, stating agents were already on site.
We have reports of a shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota. FBI is present on location, and we ask that you please keep possible victims, civilians or law enforcement officers endangered in your prayers,” Patel posted on X.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also responded, confirming the presence of state agencies.
“Been briefed that there’s been a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and I will continue to give updates as we learn more. BCA and State Patrol are on scene,” he tweeted on X.
“I’m praying for our students and teachers whose first week of school was spoiled by this terrible act of violence.”
Minneapolis Plagued by Recent Violence
The shooting contributes to an alarming trend of gun violence in Minneapolis. On Tuesday, one was fatally shot and six were wounded in a shooting near another high school. Later on, two others were killed in two separate shootings within the city.
As the FBI takes the lead on investigating, the city is left wondering how the cycle of violence killing Minneapolis can be broken.
