Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke out strongly on Saturday, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to make the occupation of Ukrainian land appear lawful. This comes as international efforts to find a peace agreement between the two countries are increasing.
War’s End Depends on Russia, Says Zelensky
Zelensky made it clear that stopping the war rests fully with Moscow. In a message to the Ukrainian people, he said, “First and foremost, there must be a just end to the war, and it depends on Russia. It is Russia that must end the war it started.”
A Call for Genuine and Lasting Peace
The Ukrainian leader emphasized that Ukraine and its allies all want the same thing: a ceasefire and an end to the violence. He pointed out, “Only one actor stands against this, Putin. His only card is the ability to kill, and he is trying to sell the cessation of killings at the highest possible price.”
Zelensky said what the country needs is not just a short pause in fighting but a true and permanent peace. He also noted that US President Donald Trump shared this view. Trump is scheduled to meet Putin on August 15 in Alaska to discuss ways to stop the war.
Supporting Trump’s Peace Efforts
Zelensky expressed confidence in America’s role in ending the conflict, saying, “I have not heard any partners express doubts about America’s ability to ensure that the war ends. The President of the United States has the levers and the determination. Ukraine has supported all of President Trump’s proposals, starting back in February. Ceasefire, all formats have been supported.”
He accused Putin of wanting to gain territory and legitimize the occupation, warning that Ukraine would never accept a “second partition” following the earlier loss of Crimea.
Ukraine Left Out of Peace Meeting in Alaska
The upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska, aimed at ending the war that began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has caused frustration in Kyiv. Despite many requests from Ukraine and European leaders, there is no sign Ukraine will be included in the talks.
Zelensky reacted angrily, saying, “We won’t give land to the occupier,” and cautioned, “any decisions without Ukraine are also decisions against peace.”
