Canada’s Wildfire Threat Shifts East: Could Your Town Be The Next To Burn?

Wildfires have devastated Canada in 2025, with prairies and Atlantic regions hardest hit. Experts warn climate change makes fires a national risk, urging residents and governments to rethink preparedness strategies.

Canada’s Fire Season Goes Off the Rails

Road closures, wholesale evacuations, and words of warning from authorities have been dark constants of Canada’s wildfire season. This year, however, as the nation grapples with its second-worst burn on record, the fires are defying established trends. Rather than engulfing the western provinces traditionally the epicenter of devastation the worst fires are burning through the Prairies and Atlantic Canada.

Experts caution the change is reflective of a new reality: fire danger now looms over almost every corner of the nation. Almost 7.5 million hectares have already been torched so far in 2025, far exceeding the 10-year average, and the destruction continues to rise.

Prairies and Atlantic Canada Under Siege

Saskatchewan and Manitoba hold over 60% of the ground burned to date, displacing tens of thousands of people. In Newfoundland and Labrador, uncontrollable fires prompted Premier John Hogan to prohibit off-road vehicles from forest areas, stating the province “simply cannot afford any further risks.”

Nova Scotia, where almost every blaze is human-caused, has taken similar steps halting camping, hiking, and fishing in forests. A 15-hectare fire continues to burn outside Halifax, stoking fears that conditions could worsen. “The risk is extremely high,” said Premier Tim Houston. “We’re doing everything possible to protect people and property, but at this point, we’re just praying for rain.”

Even Ontario hasn’t escaped. Blazes broke out in the Kawartha Lakes, a summer vacation spot just north of Toronto, demonstrating how fast fires can creep into unsuspected territory.

A National Wake-Up Call

Geography and industry have long made western provinces such as Alberta and British Columbia take the heat of Canada’s wildfires. That all changed in 2023 as a record-shattering season swept smoke plumes over North America, making the problem a worldwide crisis.

“This is no longer a western problem,” said Paul Kovacs of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction. “We’re seeing fires everywhere forcing evacuations, destroying buildings, choking cities. It’s now a national issue, and it can strike anywhere.”

Experts warn that the majority of homeowners in areas of high fire risk are still unprepared, with few having taken action to fireproof their homes. Kovacs emphasized that communities must change their mindset: “This is our new reality. Fires aren’t going back to what they were 25 years ago.”

Climate Change and a Dangerous Future

Scientists report that the change in fire patterns is an unmistakable indicator of climate change. Increased heat and dryness have eliminated the concept of “safe zones” in Canada. “Even if an area used to be low risk, that’s no longer true,” says University of British Columbia’s Jen Baron.

The federal government has committed millions to researching adaptation measures, but warns Baron the task is daunting. “Wildfire is a natural process, but with global warming, it’s getting more difficult to contain. Each year will be a big fire year somewhere.”

As the continent itself struggles with its worst fire season in decades, the message is unmistakable: wildfires are no longer local tragedies. They’re international crises, transforming landscapes, economies, and communities one season at a time.
