WE WOMEN WANT: TRANS FEMININES OPEN UP ABOUT THEIR STRUGGLES

What is a transfeminine, how is it different from being a homosexual? What are the laws that help transwomen, and what are the surgeries involved? These are some of the issues raised in this week’s episode of “We Women Want,” as we speak to a panel comprising of Niti Shukla, an activist, a national director, and a jury member for the Miss Universe Trans Pageant. Niti also works as a fashion coordinator and for the upliftment of transpeople. On the show is also Naaz Joshi, who is India’s first international Trans Beauty Queen and is now an activist, entrepreneur running her own beauty pageants, and motivational speaker. Mausam, a transfeminine who is a registered pharmacist but is working at Tolly Badhais to raise money because she fears that running a shop will not be feasible because society won’t accept her, also joins us on the show. While Mausam is not in favour of having surgery to complete the physical transition, she talks about how she sees herself as a woman and not a man. Naaz talks about how her parents distanced themselves from her because the neighbours thought she was too `feminine’ though she was born a boy, how she was raped by her uncles and finally worked and saved money for her surgery, working at dhabas and later on in beauty shows and with designers. Naaz’s story is a motivational one, for she feels that one should not limit their ambitions just because they are transperson. We Women Want is a weekly show that explores out-of-the box issues such as this. Through our discussions, we raise awareness about women’s issues and raise awareness about women’s issues.
