Veteran singer Usha Uthup recently had an encounter with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud at an event in Delhi, where she took the opportunity to ask him about the verdict on a high-profile rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
During the conclave, Uthup approached the CJI and asked, “What are you doing here? Why aren’t you in court? When will you announce your decision on the Kolkata case?” She added, “The entire world is watching.” This exchange was shared by a media person on X (formerly Twitter), noting that Chandrachud handled the situation gracefully.

A video has also surfaced showing Uthup and CJI Chandrachud performing the classic song ‘Summer Wine’ together at the event. Uthup led the rendition, playfully encouraging the CJI to join, creating a fun moment that was met with cheers from the audience.
In response to the tragic case, doctors across India have protested the murder and alleged sexual assault of the post-graduate trainee doctor, calling for justice. Demonstrations were held in cities including Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Hrithik Roshan, Suhana Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Kriti Sanon have also expressed their support, standing in solidarity with the victim’s family.
