The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has filed a police complaint against Instagram influencer Archana Makwana for performing yoga at Sri Darbar Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. This incident, which occurred on June 21, the International Day of Yoga, has sparked outrage within the Sikh community. The SGPC, responsible for the management of the Golden Temple, has taken disciplinary action against three employees for allowing Makwana to conduct yoga exercises in the ‘Parikrama’ area, a marble walkway where devotees traditionally circumambulate, pray, and pay their respects.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the incident, stating that it disregarded the sanctity of the holy place and hurt Sikh sentiments. He emphasized the respect that the Golden Temple holds among Sikhs worldwide, and expressed disappointment that Makwana did not show reverence during her time at the temple. Following widespread criticism and public outcry, Makwana issued a public apology for her actions.
Golden Temple General Manager Bhagwant Singh Dhangera confirmed that Makwana had indeed performed yoga after entering the premises early in the morning, spending nearly an hour in the ‘Parikrama’ area without observing the required reverence. The SGPC, often referred to as the ‘Mini Parliament’ of Sikhism, has initiated an inquiry into the matter to investigate further and ensure such incidents do not recur.
