US President Joe Biden’s performance in the recent Presidential debate against Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday, has worried some members of his party due to his frequent mistakes, pauses, and blank stares. Despite these issues, Biden is determined to continue his campaign and plans to participate in another debate with Trump which is scheduled to take place on 10 September.

Although Biden won the Democratic primaries earlier this year, he hasn’t officially become the party’s candidate yet. This will only be decided at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago from August 19-22. There’s no official process to replace Biden as the tentative nominee. If he steps down, the delegates from the primaries would choose a new candidate. These delegates are encouraged to vote according to the wishes of the voters who elected them but are not legally required to do so.

If Biden were to step aside, several potential replacements could be considered as mentioned below.

  1. Kamala Harris: As Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris is the most likely replacement. However, she has been criticized for her performance and has low approval ratings. If Biden steps down, Harris would automatically become president.
  2. Gavin Newsom: Governor Gavin Newsom of California has rejected rumors about him being a nominee, calling them “nonsensical speculation.” However, he is recognized for his support of Democrats nationwide and could potentially replace Biden.
  3. J.B. Pritzker: Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, one of the wealthiest potential replacements, is known for his strong positions on abortion rights, legalizing recreational marijuana, and gun control.
  4. Dean Phillips: Dean Phillips ran in the Democratic primaries this year but didn’t win any contests. Although he had some supporters but he didn’t gain wide approval from the party.
  5. Sherrod Brown: At 71 of age, Sherrod Brown would be the oldest option to replace Biden but is still seven years younger than Trump. He is well-known for supporting labor rights, IVF, and abortion.
  6. Michelle Obama: Michelle Obama has been seen as a possible candidate for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination, but she has always said she doesn’t want to run. In March, her office confirmed she supports Biden and Harris’ re-election and will not run for president.

Despite worries about Biden’s debate performance, there are several potential replacements. The top choices are Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and J.B. Pritzker. Michelle Obama is also considered, though she’s less likely to participate despite her popularity in the Democratic Party.
