Indian skipper Rohit Sharma disclosed that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant experienced swelling on his previously operated knee after taking a hit during the first Test against New Zealand. The incident occurred when Pant missed a sharply spinning delivery from Ravindra Jadeja in the 37th over of New Zealand’s innings, resulting in the ball striking his left knee—the same leg where he underwent multiple surgeries following his serious car accident in late 2022.

Pant was seen limping off the field soon after, and Dhruv Jurel stepped in as his replacement behind the stumps.

Concerns About Pant’s Health

Rohit Sharma explained the seriousness of the situation due to Pant’s previous surgeries but assured that the injury was being managed cautiously. “Unfortunately, the ball hit straight on his knee cap, the same leg which he has done a surgery. So, he has got a little bit of swelling on it and the muscles are quite tender at this point of time,” Rohit mentioned during the post-day press conference.

Precautionary Measures Taken

The Indian captain eased concerns over Pant’s fitness, clarifying that his exit from the field was a precautionary step. “It is a precautionary measure. We do not want to take a risk. Rishabh does not want to take a risk because he has gone through a massive surgery on that particular leg,” Rohit added. He expressed hope that Pant would recover by the next day, saying, “Hopefully, tonight he can recover and we will see him back on the field tomorrow.”

Pant’s Contribution with the Bat

Earlier in the game, Pant was the top-scorer for India, contributing 20 runs in their low total of 46, continuing his efforts despite the injury scare.
