The United Nations General Assembly has officially declared December 21 as World Meditation Day. The resolution was adopted unanimously. A core group of countries, including India, Liechtenstein, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mexico, and Andorra, led the initiative.
India’s Key Role in the Resolution
India’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, expressed his happiness about the resolution on social media. He said, “A day for comprehensive well-being and inner transformation! Glad that India, along with other nations of the core group, guided the unanimous adoption of the resolution on the declaration of December 21 as World Meditation Day.”
Why December 21 is Special
Ambassador Harish explained the significance of December 21. It coincides with the Winter Solstice and marks the beginning of Uttarayana in Indian tradition. This time of year is ideal for meditation and self-reflection. He also noted that December 21 is exactly six months after the International Day of Yoga, celebrated on June 21.
Meditation’s Global Benefits
India’s mission to the UN highlighted the many benefits of meditation. It is an effective tool for inner transformation and peace. Modern science supports these claims, showing that meditation helps reduce stress and improve both cognitive and physical functions.
India’s Wellness Promotion
Ambassador Harish also reflected on India’s role in promoting global wellness. He referred to the success of the International Day of Yoga, established in 2014. Over the last decade, yoga has become a global movement, with millions practicing it every day.
Global Support for Meditation Day
The resolution for World Meditation Day was introduced by Liechtenstein and co-sponsored by India and several other countries. It aims to promote meditation as a practice that fosters harmony between mind, body, and nature. This initiative is especially relevant in today’s world, marked by conflicts and rising tensions.
India’s Vision for Global Peace
India’s involvement in this resolution is consistent with its philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or “the world is one family.” Ambassador Harish concluded, saying, “This declaration reflects our commitment to human wellness and global peace.”
