The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed an 18-member squad for the upcoming Test tour of Australia, which will feature five matches from November 2024 to January 2025. Notably, pacer Mohammed Shami was omitted as selectors opted for emerging talents. In addition to the main squad, three players will join as traveling reserves.
All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and fast bowler Harshit Rana have earned their maiden call-ups, bringing new energy to the team. Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran was also included, given the likelihood of captain Rohit Sharma missing one of the first two Tests due to personal commitments. Easwaran, known for his prolific run-scoring in domestic cricket, could make his debut in the Perth or Adelaide Tests.
Mohammed Shami, who has been recovering from a longstanding ankle injury, did not make the squad despite resuming training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Reports from the Indian Express indicate that Shami’s inclusion hinges on his performance in domestic matches. He is slated to play for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy against Karnataka in early November, post-Diwali. Having last played in the 2023 World Cup final, Shami’s return to form remains highly anticipated.
With Shami out, the selectors have enhanced the pace department by adding young fast bowlers, including Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana, to complement Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep. As traveling reserves, Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, and Khaleel Ahmed will provide further depth to India’s bowling resources, ensuring preparedness for the demanding tour ahead.
