On Monday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) honoured Abhinav Bindra with the Olympic Order for his exceptional contributions to the Olympic movement. Bindra, who made history as the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal, will receive the prestigious award at a ceremony during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris on August 10, just before the closing of the 33rd Summer Olympic Games.

What is the Olympic Order?

The Olympic Order is the highest accolade bestowed by the IOC, recognizing individuals who have significantly advanced the Olympic ideals, achieved notable merit in sports, or provided outstanding service to the Olympic cause. Bindra’s award acknowledges his remarkable achievements and his impact on the Olympic movement.

In a letter dated July 20, IOC President Thomas Bach informed Bindra of the decision, highlighting his distinguished service to the Olympic Movement. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated Bindra on this recognition, praising him for inspiring generations of shooters and Olympians.

At 41, Bindra is celebrated for winning the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His involvement in the sports community extends beyond his competitive career, having served on the Athlete Committee of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) and as its Chair from 2014 to 2020. He has also been a member of the IOC Athlete Commission since 2018.
