Sarma Announces Life Imprisonment Law, New Domicile Policy for Assam

In a recent BJP meeting, Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted upcoming legislative changes, including a new law to address ‘love jihad,’ which would mandate life imprisonment for such offenses.

Sarma, a key BJP leader in the North East, also revealed plans for a new domicile policy in Assam, restricting government jobs to those born in the state. He emphasized that the Assam government has prioritized indigenous people in filling the one lakh government jobs as promised during the elections.

Additionally, Sarma announced a new regulation on land transactions involving Hindus and Muslims, requiring approval from the chief minister for such deals.

He reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a uniform civil code in Assam. Last month, Sarma visited Jharkhand and alleged that ‘Bangladeshi infiltrators’ were illegally occupying tribal land in Gaibathan village. He claimed that despite a court order to return the land to the Adivasi family, the administration had not acted, and the family faced attacks when they attempted to build on their property.

Sarma has frequently voiced concerns about demographic changes in Assam and other regions, predicting that the 2021 census will reveal significant shifts in Eastern India’s demographics. He attributes these changes to “demographic invasion” and appeasement policies, which he believes have hindered efforts to address the issue.
