Maldives’ Foreign Minister, Moosa Zameer, engaged in diplomatic discussions with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties and address recent developments, including the possibility of President Mohamed Muizzu’s upcoming visit to New Delhi. During the talks, held on Thursday, Zameer emphasized the importance of mutual interests and reciprocal sensitivity in nurturing relations between the two nations. The discussion included measures to mend strained ties and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation. Addressing concerns over derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Zameer assured that the Maldivian government was taking steps to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. He reiterated that such remarks did not reflect the official stance of the Maldives and underscored the government’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with India.
Regarding President Muizzu’s decision to visit China before India, Zameer clarified that discussions had been held with New Delhi, but the timing was adjusted for the convenience of both sides. However, he affirmed ongoing discussions with India to organize the President’s visit to Delhi soon. The discussions also encompassed economic cooperation and debt relief measures for the Maldives, highlighting India’s integral role in the Maldivian economy. Zameer expressed appreciation for India’s developmental assistance, which has significantly benefited the Maldivian populace and contributed to their well-being.
Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First policy’ and expressed optimism about strengthening cooperation across various domains. The ministers discussed bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, reaffirming their commitment to fostering closer ties. India’s decision to replace its military personnel from the Maldives before May 10 was also addressed during the discussions. Both sides confirmed the planned withdrawal, reflecting the ongoing cooperation and shared commitment to regional stability.
