Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, President of the Awami Ittehad Party and Independent MP from Baramulla, surrendered at Tihar Jail on Monday after the expiration of his interim bail in an NIA terror-funding case. Before entering jail, Rashid made a passionate statement about his dedication to the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, declaring he was “ready to sacrifice” his life if needed.
“We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the public,” he told ANI, adding, “Whether we are in jail or at home, we will always talk about the welfare of the people and the peace of Kashmir with honor and dignity.” Rashid, who has spent five and a half years in jail previously, said he remains undeterred by his return to prison, confident that “justice will prevail.”
Rashid condemned recent violent incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating that the people of the Union Territory are against violence. He urged for reconciliation, calling on all stakeholders to engage in dialogue to bring lasting peace to the region. “Peace cannot be achieved without justice,” he emphasized, urging for a comprehensive approach to conflict resolution.
In his statements, Rashid also criticized regional leaders, notably Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, accusing them of shifting stances on Kashmir’s issues based on political convenience. He argued that the Abdullah-led party has maintained a “double standard” since 1947, using Article 370 for electoral gain but neglecting it post-elections. “The people will teach them a lesson,” Rashid warned, asserting that voters will hold leaders accountable for inconsistencies in their approach to Kashmir’s autonomy and development.
Rashid concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the rights and development of Kashmiris and encouraged people to stay resilient.
