During his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics. Following this, he met with the Indian athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics to gather their insights and feedback to strengthen the country’s bid for the 2036 Games.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has initiated discussions with the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission (FHC) regarding India’s interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics.

During his meeting with the athletes, PM Modi emphasized the importance of their experiences and suggestions. He stated, “India is preparing to host the 2036 Olympics. Your input is crucial because you have firsthand experience of what it takes to compete at the highest level. We want to document your feedback and share it with the government to ensure we cover all aspects of preparation for 2036.”

PM Modi underscored the athletes’ role in this initiative, referring to them as an integral part of his “2036 team.” He directed the Sports Ministry to compile a comprehensive document based on the athletes’ feedback and recommendations.

He added, “You are a vital part of my 2036 team, helping us to host an Olympics like never before. The Sports Ministry should prepare a draft incorporating your detailed feedback so that we can plan effectively.”

PM Modi also encouraged athletes to provide suggestions on how to enhance Indian sports further and to engage with future players through social media. He proposed that the Sports Ministry could organize interactive sessions in various locations to gather additional insights.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), through its Future Host Commission (FHC), is responsible for awarding hosting rights for the Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) interested in hosting the Olympics must engage in ongoing discussions with the FHC. These dialogues are part of a process that culminates in a targeted discussion with shortlisted NOCs. The final decision is made by the IOC’s Executive Board, which votes to determine the host city for the Games.
