During his visit to Warsaw, Poland, on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s commitment to working with friendly nations to support the early restoration of peace and stability in Ukraine and West Asia. Modi highlighted that conflicts in these regions are of deep concern and reiterated India’s belief that no problem can be solved on the battlefield. Instead, he advocated for dialogue and diplomacy as the means to achieve lasting peace.
Speaking after his talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Modi expressed India’s readiness to provide all possible support in facilitating peace efforts. He underscored the importance of preventing the loss of innocent lives, which has become a significant challenge for humanity.
Tusk welcomed Modi’s involvement, viewing his visit as a potential step towards a peace process, especially with Modi’s upcoming visit to Kyiv. Tusk acknowledged that India could play a crucial and positive role in ending the war in Ukraine.
Modi’s visit to Kyiv, scheduled for Friday, is being closely watched for any role India might play in mediating between Russia and Ukraine. India has maintained a balanced stance on the conflict, abstaining from voting on most Ukraine-related resolutions at the United Nations and refraining from publicly criticizing Russia’s actions. Despite facing criticism for its purchase of discounted Russian commodities, India has consistently called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
Ukraine has encouraged India to take on a more prominent role in peace efforts, given its close ties with Russia and its influence as a leader of the Global South. The discussions between Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to focus on Zelenskyy’s peace formula and the broader efforts to bring an end to the conflict.
