Skywatchers all over the world are excited to witness the celestial spectacle of a supermoon this year for the first time, the Harvest Moon who plans revenge on October 6 in the evening. This moon will be gracefully robed in silver where it will prove to be a delight for its watchers, the NASA says, that this full moon will shine about 30% brighter and perhaps appear 14% larger than the smallest full moon of the year.

What it is called as the Harvest Moon?

The Origin of the word Harvest Moon dates back to agriculture and celestial description. The full moon that falls near the period of the autumnal equinox, which in 2025 would have occurred on September 22, is called the Harvest Moon. Historically, farmers would work under the bright glow of the moon trying to complete their harvest all night. The Harvest Moon shines in late September but in some years with the change in calendars and it will shine in the early part of October like this year. This will be amongst the latest occasions of the Harvest Moon since 1987, a rare treat for watchers.

What makes it a supermoon?

Supermoon is a term used to refer to the full Moon occurring at perigee the point in its orbit around Earth which is closest to the Earth because of this position, the Moon seems to take on a larger and brighter appearance than at any other time with brightness being the factor which one may not to miss, even though the size may seem to differ very slightly to the untrained eye. The Harvest Moon of 2025 will become closest to Earth around 11:47 PM EST (3:47 AM IST on October 7), at an approximate distance of 361,457 km, adding to the marvel of such a sight.

How to Watch the Supermoon?

The best way to see this supermoon will be by looking towards the east horizon moments after sunset on the 6th of October. The moon will appear from the horizon around sunset and would be full for days to follow. In the UK, expect the moon to rise at about 6:20 p.m. GMT on the 7th of October while in India and Asia, the moon will be on view almost immediately after sunset. The observers should seek elevated locations free from obstructions that prevent them from enjoying the full view no special equipment is required, binoculars will make fascinating surface details, such as craters and lunar plains visible.

After the Harvest Moon, skywatchers will be looking forward to another supermoon in November called the Beaver Moon which is due on November 5, 2025. This one will be the largest and closest supermoon of 2023. Viewing will be highly weather dependent and it looks good for southern England and Wales while some northern areas could become cloudy. In India, the Beaver Moon is expected to rise around 6:30 p.m. IST and will be visible across much of the country if weather permits.

The golden Harvest Moon not only enlivens the night sky but signals the return of natural wonders and celebrates this ageless bond between man and cosmos inspiring awe and revelry throughout the world.
