In an exclusive interview with the UK-based Financial Times, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled India’s foreign policy strategy, terming it “mix-and-match diplomacy,” emphasizing pragmatic engagement aligned with national interests. PM Modi highlighted the interconnected and interdependent nature of the world while underscoring India’s commitment to prioritizing its national interest in global affairs.
Addressing the complexity of contemporary geopolitics, Modi stated, “Our foremost guiding principle in foreign affairs is our national interest,” allowing India to engage with other nations in a manner that respects mutual interests.
On the India-US relationship, PM Modi acknowledged its “upward trajectory” despite recent allegations involving an Indian government official in a plot on US soil. Modi emphasized the broadened engagement, deepened understanding, and warmer friendship in the current India-US ties.
Regarding the allegations, Modi asserted that India is committed to the rule of law and would investigate any evidence. He stated, “If a citizen of ours has done anything good or bad, we are ready to look into it.”
The interview also touched on India’s global role, including hosting the “Voice of the Global South” summit and advocating for the African Union’s admission to the G20. PM Modi maintained “close ties” with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin while fostering a “closer-than-ever” relationship with US President Joe Biden.
During his June state visit to the US, Modi expressed optimism about the India-US partnership making the world better in the 21st century. He highlighted the potential of India-US defense industrial cooperation, including the milestone decision to manufacture fighter jet engines by General Electric.
The interview further addressed India’s proactive role in regional stability, including addressing the Israel-Hamas war. PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to a two-state solution and delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, showcasing India’s efforts to contribute to peace in the region.
In his address to the 2nd Voice of the Global South Summit, PM Modi called for unity among Global South countries in the face of emerging challenges, emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomacy in addressing conflicts like the Israel-Hamas situation.
