Dr. Sermed emphasized the importance of pre-soaking chia seeds in water or another liquid before consumption. This step allows the seeds to hydrate and expand outside the body, reducing the risk of choking. According to him, soaking them for 20-30 minutes ensures they are safe and beneficial for ingestion.

Dr. Saiprasad G Lad, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai, further discussed the potential risks associated with chia seed consumption in an interview with HT Lifestyle.

Potential Risks and Precautions:

  • Water Absorption: Chia seeds can absorb water up to 12 times their weight, forming a gel-like consistency when soaked.
  • Adequate Fluid Intake: To prevent discomfort and bloating, it’s crucial to consume chia seeds with plenty of fluids such as water, milk, or alternatives.
  • Digestive Issues and Bloating: Insufficient fluid intake can cause chia seeds to expand in the stomach, leading to digestive discomfort and bloating.
  • Cramps and Constipation: High fiber content combined with inadequate hydration may result in constipation and abdominal cramps.
  • Food Bolus Impaction: This occurs when a mass of food, like swollen chia seeds, gets stuck in the esophagus, requiring immediate medical attention.
  • Medical Emergencies: If chia seeds block the airway (trachea), it can cause choking and difficulty breathing, necessitating urgent medical intervention.
  • Endoscopic Removal: In severe cases of food bolus impaction, an endoscopic procedure may be needed to remove or push the mass into the stomach safely.

Overall, while chia seeds offer nutritional benefits, proper preparation and adequate fluid intake are essential to mitigate potential risks associated with their consumption.
