Brandon Durham, a 43-year-old Black man, tragically lost his life after calling 911 to report a break-in at his Las Vegas home. Durham, who was with his 15-year-old daughter, informed the operator that multiple individuals were shooting at their house and attempting to break in. He locked himself in the bathroom and waited for police to arrive.
Shocking bodycam footage from the scene shows a Las Vegas police officer firing at Durham. Officers, including Officer Bookman, arrived to find shattered cars and heard screaming from inside the house. They discovered Durham wrestling with 31-year-old Alejandra Boudreaux over a knife. Preliminary reports indicate that Officer Bookman fired a shot at Durham and then shot him five more times as he lay on the ground. Despite efforts to revive him, Durham was declared dead at the scene.
Durham’s daughter, Isabella Durham, expressed her outrage, stating, “I’m disgusted with the Metropolitan Police…the fact that they wrongfully shot my dad and then tried to spin the narrative to cover them, saying that there were gunshots there, that he had a knife, none of that is true.” She also criticized the police for treating her father like the criminal, saying, “They told him to ‘stay down’ as if he were the criminal, not the victim.”
Rachael Gore, Durham’s domestic partner, remarked, “What are you looking at? Not the colours of the clothes, you’re looking at the colour of the skin and that’s why he’s dead.”
Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren confirmed that Durham had instructed his daughter to go to her room and lock the door while he awaited help. Officer Bookman was the first to enter the house, kicking in the door.
