Malayalam actor-director Pratap Pothen passes away in Chennai

Malayalam actor and filmmaker Pratap Pothen passed away in Chennai on Friday morning. The 70-year-old actor was found dead in his apartment. Reportedly he used to live alone in Chennai.

Pratap Pothen’s wife shared his demise news and said, “Passed away in his sleep after suffering a heart attack.”

However, more details about his demise are awaited. Pratap was last seen in Mammootty starrer ‘CBI 5 The Brain’, released a few months back. In which the actor did a great job.

Pratap Pothen worked in more than 100 movies

Pratap Pothen has acted in around 100 films, including Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, and Hindi films. He made his debut as an actor in the 1978 film Aaravam which Bharathan directed. Pothen other popular works include Thakara, Chamaram, 22 Mahila Kottayam. Movies such as Mudupani (1980), Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), Nenjathai Kilathe (1980), and Panneer Pushpangal (1981) made Pratap famous in Tamil as well.

Moreover, Pratap Pothen made his directorial debut in 1985 with Meedum Oru Kathal Kathai, the story of a mentally unsound couple, and for this movie, he won a National Award. He directed three films in Malayalam – Ritubhedam, Daisy and Oru Yatramozhi, starring Mohanlal and Sivaji Ganesan.

Pratap married actress Radhika in 1985. However, their marriage did not last long, and they separated in 1986. He then remarried in 1990 to Amala Satyanath, a senior corporate professional. The couple had a daughter, Kia, born in 1991. Their marriage also ended in 2012 after 22 years.
