In a carefully orchestrated scheme, robbers posing as wholesale distributors for a well-known French retailer managed to deceive Neal’s Yard Dairy in London, making away with 22 tonnes of artisanal cheddar cheese. According to The Metro, the theft involved over 950 wheels of luxury cheddar, causing a significant financial blow to the dairy house and its artisan partners.
The scam targeted Neal’s Yard Dairy’s warehouse in Southwark, where thieves presented themselves as suppliers for a prominent French retailer. Trusting the fraudsters, the dairy staff released the valuable shipment, only to later realize they had been duped. The cheese had disappeared, leaving the company in shock at the sophistication of the fraud.

The Metropolitan Police, now investigating the case, stated, “On Monday, 21 October, we received a report of the theft of a large quantity of cheese from a manufacturer based in Southwark. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances.” No arrests have been made so far.
Despite the loss, Neal’s Yard Dairy has announced it will fully compensate the small-scale cheesemakers affected, including renowned producers Hafod, Westcombe, and Pitchfork. Known for their high-quality, handcrafted cheddar, these artisans are spared from financial strain due to Neal’s Yard’s support, reflecting the company’s commitment to its partners in this challenging situation. The estimated £300,000 (over ₹3 crore) loss impacts both the dairy and its inventory significantly.
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver expressed his dismay over the heist on Instagram, raising awareness of the incident among his followers. “In a shocking turn of events, Neal’s Yard Dairy has fallen victim to a brazen heist of epic proportions,” he shared, describing how the thieves deceived warehouse staff under the guise of a wholesale supply deal with a French retailer.
