Meanwhile, Ghazipur is one of UP’s 80 Lok sabha seats, which is always on the news during Lok sabha elections.

The gangster-turned- politician Mukhtar Ansar, who has died recently, exercised huge influence in both Mau and Ghazipur districts. He has previously won these seats by a huge margin in many assembly elections.

Ghazipur’s Political Landscape

The Lok Sabha seat of Ghazipur consists of six assembly segments-  Jakhania (reserved), Saidpur (reserved), Ghazipur Sadar, Jangipur, and Jamnia.

It is considered a largest Lok sabha seat, as it boasts of 2,074,883 voters this 2024 election.

Mukhtar Ansari’s elder brother Afzal Ansari had previously won 2019 general elections from Ghazipur in BSP’s (Bahujan Samaj Party) ticket. Defeating BJP’s Manoj Sinha, who had served as minister of state’s railway minister in Narendra Modi-led government.

This time, in the 7th phase of election, he is fighting from this constituency again, but as a Samajwadi Party’s candidate against BJP’s candidate Paras Nath Rai and BSP’s candidate Dr Umesh Kumar Singh.

In addition, Ansari’s daughter Nusrat Ansari, is also contesting the election, as her father’s backup candidate. Who interestingly, is currently facing legal charges under Gangster Act.

Meanwhile, in the 7th phase of Lok Sabha election, seven states and one union territory (Chandigarh) are currently voting.

The states which have gone to polls are the following: – Punjab (13 seats), Himachal Pradesh (4 seats), Uttar Pradesh (13 seats), West Bengal (9 seats), Bihar (8 seats), Odisha (6 seats) and Jharkhand (3 seats). Subsequently, the counting will take place on June 4.
