The junior doctors at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College are expressing frustration with the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) handling of the probe into the August 9 rape and murder of their colleague. Under the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum, they voiced concern that the investigation lacks depth, with only one individual named in the CBI’s chargesheet despite possible involvement of others. Forum spokesperson Debashis Halder questioned whether “other perpetrators” and certain hospital authorities were thoroughly investigated.
To push for a faster and more comprehensive investigation, the junior doctors announced several upcoming protests. On November 9, they plan a large rally from College Square to Esplanade in Kolkata, along with similar rallies across West Bengal. Additionally, they are organizing a mass convention on Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Esplanade, calling on the public to support their demand for justice. Halder also urged residents of Bengal to light lamps in solidarity on November 4, symbolizing a call for truth.
Halder expressed concerns that the limited scope of the CBI investigation might allow the accused to obtain bail, thereby undermining justice. He criticized the “routine” nature of the investigation and questioned whether higher hospital officials and health department authorities were adequately scrutinized.
Earlier, the junior doctors staged a hunger strike starting October 5, which they paused after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured them of action. However, their dissatisfaction with the CBI’s approach has led them to intensify their movement, demanding a more thorough inquiry.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticized the renewed protests, with senior TMC MP Kalyan Bandyopadhyay alleging that the movement had been “hijacked” by the CPI(M) and lacked a substantial cause. Bandyopadhyay questioned the repeated protests, claiming they only served to inconvenience the public.
The escalating tension around the RG Kar case reflects the growing unrest among junior doctors as they push for justice, maintaining that a thorough investigation and accountability are essential.
