Earlier on 5 August (Monday) due to shooting stones in the Ramban district, the highway was closed to vehicular traffic.
Meanwhile, this highway connects the Union Territory with the rest of the country and through this highway, all essential supplies and vehicles pass.
Moreover, on 8 July a cloudburst took place at the holy cave of Amarnath which resulted in a heavy discharge of water in the ‘Nallah and claimed 16 lives, and reportedly 36 people were missing.
After this incident, Amarnath Yatra was partially suspended and from 11 July it was resumed from the Nunwan Pahalgam side.
However, on 5 July another cloudburst was triggered and the Srinagar-Leh highway was blocked.
