With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to turn 75 years on September 17, 2025, there has been a renewed debate on retirement. Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) unofficial “75-year rule,” many of its veteran leaders like LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Jaswant Singh  had retired at that age.

The BJP has promoted retirement at 75 by following the trend of changing leadership. Senior leaders such as L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi have been pushed aside in accordance with this tradition.

Will PM Modi Resign?

Against rumors, there is no sign that PM Modi is going to resign. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale had asserted that Modi will remain as the Prime Minister until at least 2029
Further, Maharashtra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule also ruled out speculation regarding Modi’s retirement as a “political stunt”

Potential Successors

Though PM Modi has not shown any signs of retirement, there have been speculations regarding the possible successors. Names of leaders such as Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, S Jaishankar and Yogi Adityanath crop up when speculations arise about future possibilities. But any change would rest on the internal mechanisms of the BJP and the political context of the moment.

As PM Modi turns 75, the talk of his retirement is only to be expected but not based on policy. With no constitutional age cap for the Prime Minister, and backed by party colleagues, there is no reason for him to retire anytime soon. The BJP leadership change, if at all, will be determined by internal politics and the future political scenario.
