A heartbreaking moment unfolded in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday when Sandeep Kaur, lying injured on a stretcher, reached out for a final hug to her late husband, Navjot Singh.

Family members placed Singh’s body beside Kaur’s stretcher to allow her a last goodbye before his cremation. With tears rolling down her face, Kaur touched her husband’s lifeless face, creating an emotional scene that left everyone in silence.

The Tragic Accident

Navjot Singh, 52, a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, died on Sunday when a speeding BMW rear-ended the couple’s motorcycle near Delhi Cantonment metro station.

Singh suffered severe head and facial injuries, while his wife, a school teacher, sustained multiple fractures. Both were rushed to a hospital nearly 19 km away from the crash site, but Singh could not survive.

The couple was returning home to Pratap Nagar after visiting Bangla Sahib Gurdwara and having lunch at Karnataka Bhavan earlier that day.

Wife’s Plea Ignored

In her police statement, Kaur said she begged the BMW driver, Gaganpreet Kaur, and her husband, Parikshit, to take them to the nearest hospital as Singh was unconscious and needed urgent care.

“Instead, the lady took us to a small hospital in GTB Nagar, more than 19 km away. That lady told me her name was Gaganpreet Kaur,” she said.

Police Investigation

The Delhi Police confirmed that they are examining CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to establish if reckless driving caused the crash.

Officials added that the accused couple neither called the PCR nor alerted police. They failed to take the victims to a nearby hospital despite several large facilities in the area.

A senior officer said, “They themselves decided to take the couple to Nulife Hospital, more than 19 km away from the accident site, and did not provide them medical care at the earliest despite the presence of big hospitals nearby.”

Charges Against the Accused

Police have registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These include:

  • Section 281: Rash driving
  • Section 125B: Endangering life or personal safety of others
  • Section 105: Culpable homicide not amounting to murder
  • Section 238: Causing disappearance of evidence

The addition of homicide and evidence-tampering charges came after investigators found that the accused couple delayed treatment and failed to inform authorities.
