Tension continues to grip Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh as authorities have suspended internet services and tightened security ahead of this evening’s Friday prayers.
The restrictions come after violent clashes broke out last week following the cancellation of a protest linked to the ongoing ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster controversy. More than 2,000 people had gathered outside a mosque after Friday prayers and clashed with the police, leading to the arrest of 81 individuals.
Internet Suspended Across Four Districts
Internet services in Bareilly and three nearby districts will remain shut until 3 PM on Saturday, October 4. The blackout started at 3 PM on Thursday, coinciding with Dussehra celebrations.
Officials say the move is aimed at preventing rumours and communal tension from spreading through social media platforms like WhatsApp, YouTube, and Facebook.
A notification issued by Home Secretary Gaurav Dayal confirmed that SMS services, mobile data, broadband, and wireless connections have also been suspended.
Security Forces Deployed, Drones in the Air
Along with the internet clampdown, security arrangements have been intensified across the city. Personnel from the local police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed at key locations, while drones are being used for aerial surveillance.
Divisional Commissioner Bhupendra S. Chaudhary warned officials to stay vigilant, saying, “All district magistrates, deputy collectors, police and administrative officials must discharge their responsibilities seriously. Any lapse will invite stern action.”
Bareilly has been divided into four super zones and four special zones, with forces strategically positioned. According to SSP Anurag Arya, religious leaders have also been advised to head home immediately after namaz.
Neighbouring districts such as Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Budaun have also been placed on high alert. “Armed police forces are being positioned at sensitive locations. We are ensuring foolproof arrangements so that the disturbances witnessed in Bareilly do not spill over to neighbouring districts,” an official said.
How Did the ‘I Love Muhammad’ Dispute Turn Violent?
The unrest began after cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan announced a demonstration in support of the ‘I Love Muhammad’ campaign. Around 2,000 people had assembled outside a mosque to participate.
However, at the last minute, Raza called off the protest, claiming that permission had not been granted by authorities. The sudden cancellation angered many participants, leading to stone-pelting and clashes with police personnel.
Ahead of this week’s Friday prayers, Maulana Ahsan Razan Khan, the seniormost cleric of Ala Hazrat Dargah, has appealed to the public to maintain calm and disperse peacefully after offering prayers.
