Eastern Afghanistan was rocked by a catastrophic earthquake that left over 800 people dead and over 2,800 injured. Whole communities in the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar were flattened by the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred late on August 31, 2025.

Rescue crews are continuously searching for survivors all day and night, but their efforts are being hampered due to landslides and damaged roadways. The scale of destruction has left families desperate, as many are still trapped under rubble.

Widespread Destruction in Villages

The earthquake’s centre was near Jalalabad. Strong tremors were felt across several provinces. In Kunar, homes made of mudbrick collapsed within minutes, burying families inside.

Survivors are currently homeless and living outdoors. Temporary relief camps have been established, and hospitals in neighbouring towns are crowded with injured people. Recuse crews find it challenging to get to people in need because many neighbourhoods are still blocked off.

India Steps Forward With Aid

India has responded quickly to the crisis. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said India has sent 1,000 family tents to Kabul and 15 tonnes of food to Kunar province. More supplies are on the way.

PM Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy. He said, “India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid.” The Indian government has made clear that its support will continue as Afghanistan struggles with this disaster.

Global Condolences & Help

Iran and Pakistan have also expressed sorrow and offered help. The Taliban government, acknowledging that the scope of the catastrophe is well beyond its capabilities, has called on the international community to provide additional assistance.

The United Nations and other aid organizations are attempting to reach isolated regions, but the effort is being hampered by ongoing aftershocks and destroyed infrastructure.

Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

This earthquake has made the already existing problems in Afghanistan worse. Years of conflict, poverty, and natural disasters had already plagued many cities. With thousands of people uprooted and survivors in need of food, medicine, and shelter, the situation is now getting worse.

The international community’s quick action will decide how fast Afghanistan can recover and how many lives can still be saved.
