Imtiaz Ali On Highway: ‘Aishwarya Rai Was My Original Pick Over Alia Bhatt’

Imtiaz Ali’s 2014 film Highway became a defining moment in Alia Bhatt’s acting career, but in a recent interview with Mid-Day, the director disclosed that she wasn’t his initial choice for the role of Veera. Originally, Ali envisioned the character as a more mature woman, believing that an older actress would bring the necessary depth to the role.

However, a chance encounter with Bhatt at the screening of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana altered Ali’s perspective. He recalled being struck by Alia’s warmth and emotional depth during their conversation. “Her emotional quotient was very high, and I was drawn to talk to her,” Ali shared. As their discussion deepened into topics like home and society, Ali realized that the emotional depth he sought in Veera could be captured by the young actress in front of him.

Ali admitted that he had initially considered casting an older actress, such as Aishwarya Rai, who he believed could portray Veera’s rawness without makeup. “Aishwarya Rai without any makeup would be a great choice, but I didn’t approach anybody,” he revealed. After meeting Alia, however, he was convinced that she was the right fit for the role.

Highway tells the story of Veera Tripathi, a young woman from a wealthy family who is kidnapped during a highway robbery. What begins as a terrifying experience evolves into a journey of self-discovery, as Veera finds unexpected freedom in her captivity.

The film is lauded for its exploration of themes such as liberation, trauma, and the complexities of human relationships. Alia Bhatt’s portrayal of Veera, from a sheltered girl to a self-aware woman, was widely praised, marking a turning point in her career. Randeep Hooda, who plays her kidnapper Mahabir, also delivered a compelling performance, revealing the vulnerability beneath his rough exterior.

Highway is also celebrated for its breathtaking cinematography by Anil Mehta, which captures the diverse landscapes of India, and its evocative music by A.R. Rahman, which enhances the film’s emotional resonance. Imtiaz Ali’s direction, combined with these elements, makes Highway a memorable and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
