The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army have successfully paradropped a homegrown portable hospital, known as the Aarogya Maitri Health Cube, from an altitude of 15,000 feet, as announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) today. These trauma care “cubes,” touted as “the world’s first portable hospital,” are designed to rapidly set up trauma care facilities in remote areas, thereby saving lives in critical situations.
Developed under Project BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri), the Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes are a significant advancement in providing on-field medical care, particularly in challenging and inaccessible regions. The successful operation aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of delivering essential supplies and humanitarian aid to affected areas during disaster relief efforts.

The IAF utilized its US-origin C-130J Super Hercules, an advanced tactical transport aircraft, to precisely airlift and drop the health cube at the designated location. The Indian Army’s Para Brigade played a crucial role in this mission, deploying the cube using advanced precision drop equipment, showcasing their capability to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in even the most remote and mountainous regions.
These portable hospitals, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, have previously been deployed in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya to enhance medical readiness and response capabilities ahead of significant events, such as the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram temple in January.
This demonstration not only highlights the capabilities of India’s specialized military assets but also underscores the country’s commitment to improving disaster response and humanitarian aid, ensuring that critical medical assistance can reach those in need, no matter where they are.
