In a recent interview with Variety, American actor Emma Stone expressed regret over jokingly referring to her friend Taylor Swift as an ‘a–hole’ at the 2024 Golden Globes. Stone acknowledged the backlash she received from Swift’s fans and stated that she has learned from her mistake and will not make such jokes in the future.
“I definitely won’t make a joke like that again… because I saw headlines that pulled it out of context,” Stone told Variety, reflecting on the incident. She also humorously remarked on her error, saying, “What a dope.”
Stone and Swift have been friends for almost 20 years, with Swift enthusiastically applauding Stone when she won the Golden Globe for Best Feature Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in ‘Poor Things.’ Reflecting on the incident, Stone joked with reporters backstage, stating, “I’ve known her for almost 20 years. I was very happy she was there and she was also nominated tonight, which was wonderful. And yes, what an a–hole.”
Despite Stone’s win at the Oscars for her role in ‘Poor Things,’ Swift was a Golden Globe nominee for her concert film ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,’ which was ultimately not successful in the box office category, losing to ‘Barbie.’
The two actors have maintained a close friendship since meeting at the Young Hollywood Awards in 2008, with Swift attending various events with Stone over the years. Stone rarely discusses her friendship with Swift publicly, but she did mention in a Vanity Fair interview in June 2023 that Swift had helped her secure tickets to an Eras Tour event.
“I was lucky ’cause we’ve been friends for a really long time. I’ve known her since we were 17 and 18, so she hooked me up, which was very nice ’cause I know those tickets are impossible to get,” Stone told the magazine, describing Swift as “a wonderful friend.”
