Egypt Holds Israel Accountable For Impact Of Ending UNRWA Agreement

Egypt further warned that the move represents a “dangerous development” aimed at dismantling the Palestinian cause, particularly with respect to the refugee issue and the right of return.

Egypt has strongly condemned Israel’s recent withdrawal from the agreement governing the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the resulting cessation of its activities.

In a press release, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry denounced the decision as an unacceptable escalation that marks, in its view, a new chapter of systematic violations by Israel against international law and humanitarian principles.

Egypt further warned that the move represents a “dangerous development” aimed at dismantling the Palestinian cause, particularly with respect to the refugee issue and the right of return.

The ministry also emphasized that Israel’s actions display a “disregard for the United Nations, its agencies, and the international community.” This development followed Israel’s formal withdrawal of recognition for UNRWA, as Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon shared in a tweet on Monday morning.

Danon posted a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which confirmed Israel’s termination of cooperation with the agency following Knesset legislation that bars Israeli officials from engaging with the UN agency.

“Following the legislation on UNRWA, the State of Israel officially notified the President of the General Assembly of the termination of cooperation with the agency,” Danon tweeted. He added, “Despite the overwhelming evidence we submitted to the UN that substantiate Hamas’ infiltration of UNRWA, the UN did nothing to rectify the situation. The State of Israel will continue to cooperate with humanitarian organisations but not with organisations that promote terrorism against us.”

UNRWA has been facing months of scrutiny, with Israeli officials pushing to strip the agency of its authority in Gaza and to reduce its funding. These calls intensified after reports emerged alleging that some agency staff were involved in Hamas’ October 7 attacks.
