As Maharashtra gears up for its assembly elections, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the critical role of a “Viksit Maharashtra” (Developed Maharashtra) in achieving a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Jaishankar emphasized Maharashtra’s longstanding contribution to national growth and expressed confidence in the state’s pivotal role in realizing the Modi government’s developmental vision.
“In the third term of the Modi government, our aim is ‘Viksit Bharat,’ and for that, we also need a ‘Viksit Maharashtra.’ This state has consistently led in contributing to national development,” he said, advocating for the continuation of the “double-engine government” in Maharashtra, which he credited for success across other states.
Jaishankar also spotlighted India’s leadership in counter-terrorism efforts, referencing Mumbai as a global symbol of resilience. “Mumbai represents India’s strong stance on counter-terrorism. During our UNSC membership, we led the counter-terrorism committee and held a historic security council meeting in a Mumbai hotel that had witnessed a terrorist attack,” he noted, asserting that India has become a global leader in counter-terrorism.
Jaishankar praised the Modi government’s proactive stance on border security, counter-terrorism, and regional stability. Highlighting PM Modi’s diplomatic initiatives, including his involvement in the Russia-Ukraine dialogue, Jaishankar said, “Whether it’s managing border security, counter-terrorism, or regional instability, we are addressing it effectively. In his third term, PM Modi took notable steps, such as his meeting with President Putin during the BRICS summit.”
With Maharashtra’s assembly election slated for November 20 and vote counting on November 23, major political parties, including the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Congress, are preparing for the race. In the previous elections, BJP won 105 seats in 2019 and 122 in 2014.
