A man who was mowed down in a hit-and-run near Delhi’s Indraprastha College red light has been identified and the bus driver who fled the scene has been apprehended, Delhi police said on Tuesday.

The accident took place in the early hours of 3 June when the bus driver Firoz Khan turn towards Outer Ring Road near IP College’s red light. The victim has been identified as Dhanvir Singh, 27, a citizen of Nepal. According to police, on 3 June at about 05:30 AM, a PCR call regarding an accident at the IP College traffic light was received in PS Civil Lines. The team reached the spot, where it was found that the injured had been shifted to Shushruta Trauma Centre, where he was declared dead on arrival.

No eyewitnesses were found and the deceased was not carrying identity proof. Subsequently, a case under sections 279/304-A of IPC was registered at Police Station Civil Lines and an investigation was initiated. Upon checking CCTV footage, police found that a bus coming from ISBT towards the IP College red light had hit the victim, who was crossing the road. After hitting the victim, the bus driver slowed down for a moment before suddenly speeding up and fleeing the scene.

The police team tracked the bus through backward routes using the CCTV footage. Images of the offender, as well as the bus, were extracted from footage from a nearby petrol pump. After continued efforts, the relatives of the deceased were traced and the deceased was identified as Dhanvir Singh, a resident of Bijul village, Nepal. He had been working in the national capital as a delivery person at a food canteen.

The bus driver was identified as Firoz Khan, a resident of Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. Khan has been arrested and the offending vehicle has been seized.
