On the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day, the Delhi Prisons Department announced a special remission for 1,160 convicts based on their good conduct. The announcement was made by Director General (DG) of Delhi Prisons, Satish Golcha, during the flag hoisting ceremony at the Prison Headquarters on Thursday.

As per an official press release, the DG granted remission ranging from 15 to 25 days to eligible convicts, marking the celebrations with a focus on rehabilitation and correctional philosophy within the prison system.

During his address, Golcha highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving the Delhi prison facilities. “New laws have been implemented across all jails, and significant progress has been made towards enabling online court productions,” he stated. The release also mentioned ongoing training for prison staff on aspects related to inmate release and bail procedures.

In line with the correctional theme, the prison department is collaborating with various organizations, including Max Healthcare, the Ministry of Tourism, IOCL, FICCI YFLO, and the Art of Living Foundation, to provide vocational training and enhance rehabilitation programs for inmates.

Golcha also outlined recent advancements in prison security, including the installation of 1,248 additional CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition technology and new mobile jammers in high-security wards at the Tihar complex.

Health and well-being initiatives were emphasized as well, with screening tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis conducted for 10,573 inmates. A special cervical cancer screening camp was also organized in partnership with AIIMS at Jail No. 06.

To improve the welfare of prison staff, steps have been taken to address pension grievances, streamline promotion processes, and consider the creation of 3,200 new posts within the prison department.

In recognition of the efforts by prison staff, commendable officers were honored with DG Discs and appreciation letters. The event concluded with a combined parade featuring personnel from the CRPF, ITBP, and Tihar Security Personnel, adding to the patriotic celebrations.
